Department of Economics and Statistics is the nodal agency for collecting Agricultural Statistics in the State. Area enumeration is carried out in selected clusters, which are randomly selected using appropriate sampling techniques. There are 811 Investigator Zones in the State of which one Zone consists of 100 Clusters (Wet and Dry). Number of Wet and Dry clusters are determined as per the corresponding area in the Zone. Basic Tax Register (BTR) is taken as the basic document for cluster formation. The Scheme was introduced in1975-76 Agricultural Year through EARAS for estimating the Land area classified into 13 categories of Land utilization, and conducting crop cutting experiments of various crops in order to estimate production.

Prices of various commodities are collected on a daily basis from selected market centers in all districts on all working days and published by the department every day evening. The data so collected will be scrutinized and validated at directorate before publishing. Both wholesale and retail prices are collected from the markets. In addition, farm wholesale and farm retail prices are collected from the selected Taluks from the selected farmers on monthly basis and published monthly.

Registration of Births, Deaths and Still Births in India is mandatory with the enactment of Registration of Births and Deaths Act (RBD Act), 1969 and is done as per place of occurrence of the event. The Act was came into force in the State on 1st April 1970 vide Government of India Gazette Notification dated 21st March 1970 along with many other States. As per this Act, registration of Births and Deaths is compulsory and the time period for reporting occurrence of birth or death event to the Registrar for registering the same is 21 days. The data collected under RBD Act 1969 will be compiled and vital rates will be published annually.
